Academics that Empower

GSS is proud of our newly revised academic program.  At the core of the program is an inquiry based, technology rich, STEAM-infused curriculum, enriched with coding and robotics and augmented by arts enrichment and intervention. The theme-based learning units enable students to gain knowledge of a subject area from multiple perspectives and allow for tracking student progress on a given theme throughout multiple subject areas.  The new curriculum features elements that will empower our students to surge ahead of the academic curve:
  • Our 1:1 iPads initiative allows teachers to implement the latest technology into everyday lessons for their students.
  • Small class sizes promote active learning followed with data-driven evaluation and assessment.
  • Each student receives daily intervention in math or language arts.  Additional tutoring is also provided.
  • In addition to core subjects, all GSS students participate in an after school enrichment program that
integrates our curriculum into arts, music, dance, engineering, athletics and more.
  • We are holistic in our approach.  GSS addresses the academic, physical, social, emotional, moral, and
spiritual needs of each student and helps develop the growth of the student in all areas.

Enrichment Afternoons

In addition to core subjects, all Good Shepherd students participate in an after school enrichment program as a part of our extended-day, year round model.  The program integrates our STEAM-infused curriculum into arts, music, dance, engineering, athletics, robotics and more.  Students receive homework assistance, tutoring, mentoring, and have the opportunity for running through Youth Run NOLA.

The aim of the program is to build on what the students learn in school through interdisciplinary activities designed to nurture each child's self-esteem, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills.  Additionally, the extended school day provides the safe and nurturing environment that fosters learning and exposure that they may not have otherwise experienced due to the socio-economic challenges they face.

GSS: Ticket to Success
During the past several months, the Louisiana Scholarship Program has endured many challenges. The program’s funding has been under constant threat from opponents who have sought to take advantage of the state’s budget crisis. In the face of these challenges, parents have voiced their support and appreciation of a program that provides them with the financial resources to send their children to the school of their choice.

It is in this context that Thomas Moran, Jr., president of The Good Shepherd School in New Orleans, discussed the importance and value of state-funded tuition vouchers to families.
“It’s the ticket out. It’s the ticket to success,” said Moran.  "These are young kids who just need access that they wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to get – access to a place that is going to push them and expose them to what they need. To not just exist in the world, but to be successful and conquer the world.”

GSS Mission Statement
The Good Shepherd Nativity Mission School, Inc., seeks to help low-income, urban youth in order to realize their fullest potential as productive members of society by providing them with an extended-day, year-round, quality education, integrated with personal, moral and spiritual development, and continued guidance during the students' further education.

The Judeo-Christian values which have inspired the Nativity model include a respect for the dignity and potential of each person, a responsibility to assist the poor and those in need, a strong sense of community within the one family of God, and the obligation to promote a society characterized by social justice. In this Nativity model, students are enrolled without regard to race, color, religion, or ethnicity.
