Board Chairman's End of Year Message

It was a year ago I wrote you about the financial challenge that faced us during our 2008-2009 school year. Your response was truly a blessing, and your generosity helped provide funds needed to close the gap between our revenue and expenses for that operating year.

We currently have eighty-two of God’s children enrolled at The Good Shepherd School. Additionally, we have two graduate classes, a total of twenty students, who are now bringing the values and morals that they have learned at The Good Shepherd School to the quality high schools they currently attend.

Your continued support has allowed us to carry out our important mission and keep alive Fr. Tompson’s dream – to assist underserved, at-risk urban youth to realize their fullest potential by providing them with the means to work towards breaking the cycle of poverty they were born into. We are, with your help, making a difference.

With our country still in the grip of a recession, we at Good Shepherd have practiced cost control and are operating with a smaller budget than we did last year. Still, even with continued contributions by dedicated benefactors and funding for the second year from the Student Scholarship for Educational Excellence Program by the state, we began the year with a projected shortfall of $250,000.  Should your circumstances permit, we hope you will consider continuing your support with a gift to our school during this Christmas season.  Your gift will help us close this “gap” and continue to offer the students in our care with all they need to succeed. Please click here to print our donation form or use our secure online donation link at the bottom of this webpage.

You have blessed and inspired us with your investment in the future of the children of The Good Shepherd School. We wish you and your family a blessed holiday season and hope you will continue to remember the children of Good Shepherd in your prayers.  We at The Good Shepherd School will continue to keep you and all of our benefactors in our school prayers.  May God bless you and may God’s grace and compassion grow in you abundantly.

Gratefully,

Ronald P. Briggs

Board Chairman

2010 Good Shepherd Golf Tournament

The Eighth Annual Good Shepherd School Golf Tournament in Honor of Father Harry Tompson, S.J., is scheduled for Monday, March 15, 2010, at Stonebridge Golf Club of New Orleans.  Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. with tee time at 10:30.  I hope you will plan to be with us for a great day of golfing, visiting with friends, and remembering Harry in a special way.  Our 2010 Golf Tournament is graciously underwritten by Aaron Bennett of Benetech, who is partnering with us for a third year.

Our Golf Tournament is an important source of annual funding for our mission that will give our children the opportunity to break free from the cycle of poverty they were born into. Click here for a registration form to complete and return to us as soon as possible.  If you’re not a golfer, please consider joining us at the post-Tournament party and silent auction or sponsoring the 2010 Golf Tournament through a donation.

I look forward to seeing you at the Tournament.  Thank you for your continued support of the children of The Good Shepherd School.

Congratulations to our 2009 Graduating Class!

Congratulations to our 2008-2009 seventh grade class, who graduated on June 4th at Immaculate Conception Church.  The Good Shepherd School Board of Directors, faculty, and staff are very proud of these students’ accomplishments and wish them continued success as they begin high school.  We deeply appreciate all of our benefactors and volunteers who helped make this exciting day a reality.

Good Shepherd Welcomes Principal Emily M. Paul

The Board of Directors of The Good Shepherd School Nativity Mission School is proud to announce Mrs. Emily M. Paul as its new Principal beginning July 1, 2009. Mrs. Paul was selected after a nationwide search, receiving applications from as far away as California and the Virgin Islands.

Mrs. Paul was born and raised in New Orleans and has been an educator for over thirty years in both public and Catholic schools, mainly in the New Orleans area. She has been a principal for the past fourteen years.  Mrs. Paul spent twenty-six years serving St. Leo the Great Elementary School, including the last nine years as Principal.

As a result of Katrina destroying her home and permanently closing Marian Central Catholic Middle School where she was Principal, Emily and her family have spent the last four years in Shreveport, Louisiana. While there, she has been Principal of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Academy.

Mrs. Paul holds a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, a Masters Degree in Educational Administration, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education.  Her professional activities include serving as a Fellow at the School Leadership Center of Greater New Orleans, a consultant for Urban Education for the National Catholic Education Association, and a featured speaker on education at state and national levels.  Her professional memberships are numerous. Mrs. Paul is the recipient of the Order of St. Louis and an Inductee in KAPPA GAMMA PI National Honor Society.

The Board of Directors, faculty, staff, and families of Good Shepherd School welcome Emily and her husband Roy back to New Orleans and their home and are most grateful they will be part of the Good Shepherd family.
