Opened in 2001 as part of the vision of the late Fr. Harry Tompson, S.J., The Good Shepherd School provides an excellent, tuition-free education in a safe and nurturing environment to at-risk children in New Orleans who are members of families living below the federal poverty level. The effect of this exceptional academic opportunity is to empower these children by providing them with the tools to break away from the cycle of poverty into which they are born.
There are many things that make The Good Shepherd School unique. By following the Nativity School Model, our school provides an intensive, year-round education attending to the specific needs of at-risk children in order to foster academic and personal growth. Integral parts of our K-7th grade program include:
- Extended-day and year-round
- Tuition-free
- Small student / teacher ratio
- Enrichment activities
- Parental/family involvement & development
- Faith-based, character-oriented curriculum
The 2007-2008 school year will be a most exciting year for The Good Shepherd School. In May of 2008 we will watch our first graduating class move on to high school. Through our Graduate Support Program, we will monitor and assist our graduates as they make this transition. We look forward to the day when they are high school seniors and we can help facilitate their transition to college.
Because The Good Shepherd School operates a tuition-free educational model and our student population comes from families living below the poverty line, we depend entirely on the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations to pursue our important mission. We have undertaken a scholarship campaign to assist with day-to-day operating costs and to secure the long term viability of The Good Shepherd School.
We would like to invite you to invest yourself through the resources that God has given you in this work to which God has called us. We are confident in the words of Saint Paul: "You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity."
Sincerely,
Ronald Briggs
